Hollywood actor Anne Hathaway has had many memorable hits in her career. Disney Channel fans remember her as Mia Thermopolis, heir to the Genovian throne in The Princess Diaries. While Hathaway climbed the ladder of fame, fans often recall her in the classic comedy-fashion movie, The Devil Wears Prada. The 2006 movie became well known for its designer outfits brought together by designer Patricia Field. After the movie-wrapped filming, its wardrobe was donated to charity. But Hathaway fell in love with one of Andy’s on-screen looks she did not want to part with.

Anne Hathaway plays aspiring journalist, Andy Sachs

In The Devil Wears Prada, Hathaway plays the lead role as Andrea “Andy” Sachs, a new graduate from Northwestern University. Andy works as a junior personal assistant to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, to jump-start her career. Having no fashion sense, Andy decides to hold out for a year.

Her time at Runway proves difficult as she does not fit into the cutthroat and fashion-obsessed environment. Refusing to let Miranda and the industry win, Andy gets the ultimate makeover and puts in the effort. The once sweater-obsessed writer becomes a fashionista overnight wearing Chanel, Prada, and Dior. Her new glamourous work-life causes her relationship to deteriorate, and she loses sense of who she is.

Andy’s green coat almost went to auction

All of the The Devil Wears Prada costumes were auctioned off to raise money for breast cancer research, Equality Now, and Dress for Success — and it was all Meryl Streep's idea.

The 2006 movie became a classic for its portrayal of the fashion industry and Andy’s designer wardrobe montage. After raiding Runway’s extensive designer closet, Andy walks the street of New York in various outfits. According to Buzzfeed stating an article from 2006, it was Meryl Streep’s idea to auction off the movie’s wardrobe to charity.

Hathaway explains that auctioning the clothes prevented catfights between the cast and crew. But there was one particular item Hathaway wore that she desperately wanted to keep. Hathaway said in an interview, “It’s the first coat in the montage when I come out the door, and I’m wearing a green coat with leopard cuffs. And then the cab goes by, and I’m wearing a hat and these great boots. But it was the green coat. It was a one-of-a-kind vintage coat, so it wasn’t like I could just get it for myself or call a designer.”

The one-of-a-kind coat would make its way to Hathaway. At one of the promotional events leading up to the movie, Hathaway’s then-boyfriend bought her the coat as a gift. It was the ultimate gift and Hathaway jokes she told her then-boyfriend he was off the hook for her birthday.

‘The Devil Wears Prada’ is a fashion movie staple

Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep’s movie had many working parts that still make it memorable and highly talked about. It was a story of an aspiring journalist who put up with working conditions and an environment she truly did not fit in. In a Harper’s Bazaar article by Mekita Revis, she describes the movie, “glamorized hustle culture long before the term was common vernacular.”

For Andy to achieve some level of success that would lead to her future career, she had to become a fashionista. The movie became a staple when it came to the fashion industry. Andy parades around New York in designer clothing, attends high-end events, and gets gifts. It is unlikely that a person who works in the fashion industry has not seen The Devil Wears Prada and took something away from it.
