Lady Gaga and Beyoncé’s “Telephone” is one of the most iconic collaborations in pop music, with the music video continuing to earn views to this day. During one interview, the “Born This Way” artist shared some insight regarding the pop culture references in the video clip.

They left their heads and their hearts on the dance floor. 2009 brought one of pop music’s most iconic collaborations. That was for the song “Telephone,” performed by “Born This Way” singer Lady Gaga and “Crazy in Love” singer, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.

This song debuted in conjunction with The Fame Monster, earning over 375 plays on Spotify in the process. It received the MTV Video Music Award for Best Collaboration and the NRJ Music Award for Video of the Year. 

Additionally, Lady Gaga played a role in the creative process for this song and its corresponding music video. During one interview, she revealed where some of the inspiration came from regarding scenes from “Telephone.”

This music video, which is over 9 minutes long, features Lady Gaga and Beyoncé as they went from jailhouse rockers to runaways. Each wore unique and colorful outfits, and Lady Gaga even sported some soda can hair rollers.

During an interview with Ryan Seacrest, according to MTV News, Lady Gaga shared some of the pop culture references sprinkled throughout this video. That includes the inspiration behind her hair rollers. 

“My mom used to do that when I was a kid,” she explained. “‘Cause if we didn’t have any rollers in the house, she’d slice up some Coke cans, and then she’d heat them up and pin them in her hair.”

Lady Gaga shared her love for Beyoncé 

Outside of “Telephone,” Beyoncé collaborated with other award-winning artists. Her album The Lion King: The Gift featured performers like Burna Boy, Pharrell Williams, Jay-Z, and Major Lazer. Gaga shared her thoughts on working with the “Love On Top” singer.

“We’re not competitive at all. We’re so different, we respect each other so much, and she’s so kind, and we really get along,” Gaga said during an interview with MTV News regarding her relationship with Beyoncé. 

“She was so courageous in this video,” she continued. “She trusted me because she likes my work and she knew that I love her and it’s a mutual respect. It ended up being a masterpiece because she was so courageous, but I’m sure you can imagine it’s a bit daunting sometimes.”

There’s no word regarding if (or when) Lady Gaga and Beyoncé will work together to create more music. Songs by Lady Gaga, including “Telephone,” is available on most major streaming platforms.
