He attended Henry Hudson Regional High School and became friends with Kevin Smith after meeting at a youth center where Smith was working. They bonded over a shared love of comic books.

Mewes initially had an aversion to drugs because of his mother’s addictions. However, he began using them after he finished high school.
Jason Mewes’ Acting Career
Jason Mewes made his acting debut in Kevin Smith’s “Clerks” in 1994 and reprised his role as Jay in “Mallrats” the following year. He appeared in several other Smith-directed films, including “Chasing Amy,” “Dogma,” and “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.” Mewes also had cameo appearances in other films, such as “Scream 3.”

Jason Mewes’ Struggle with Drug Addiction
Jason Mewes, who married Jordan Monsanto on January 30, 2009, has had a long-standing battle with drug addiction. He started using heroin after filming “Mallrats,” and Kevin Smith, his friend and colleague, moved him into his apartment to help him kick the habit. Smith took Mewes to methadone clinics, and Jason was clean for about seven months when they started rehearsals for “Dogma.” However, Mewes fell asleep in the middle of a scene after he began using heroin again and was subsequently arrested for heroin possession in 1999.
Smith let Mewes move back in with him after he got married and bought a house, but he kicked him out when he discovered that he was using drugs again. Mewes then stole Kevin’s ATM card and spent more than $1,000 to have heroin shipped to a hotel where a “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” press junket was taking place. In an attempt to help Mewes stay sober, Smith made him go to rehab multiple times, but none were successful. Smith declined to cast Jason in “Jersey Girl.”
In late 2002, Mewes fell asleep near a lit candle while he was on heroin and woke up to discover that a fire had started. In April 2003, he turned himself in to New Jersey authorities for violating his probation, and a judge ordered him to attend rehab for six months. In July 2006, Jason stated that he was sober and had no desire to use drugs, but he relapsed after undergoing surgery in 2009. Smith launched the “Jay & Silent Bob Get Old” podcast in August 2010 to help Mewes stay sober, and he revealed in a 2014 Reddit Q&A that he had been sober since July 2010.

In 2007, Mewes and Smith were honored with an MTV Movie Award for Dirtiest Mouth Moment for their work in “Clerks II.” More recently, in 2019, Mewes received a nomination for Best Guest Star at the New Jersey Web Festival for his appearance in “All Talk.”
