Two 16-year-old girls in Mississippi have been found dead after a car crash on Sunday on the way back from their homecoming dance, according to reports.

The Jackson County Coroner has identified the two girls as 16-year-old Baleigh Bowlin and 16-year-old Chloe Taylor.

The girls attended East Central High School in Jackson County and were leaving the school's homecoming dance on Saturday night before the crash.

The families of the two girls became suspicious when they did not arrive home Saturday night. Taylor's uncle decided to go out looking for them on Sunday and found the car crash scene.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to the scene around 5:30 p.m. Sunday where they found a 2012 Nissan Altima with Taylor in the driver's seat and Bowlin as a passenger.

The Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd Jr. pronounced both the girls dead at the scene.

"Family and friends were out looking for them most of the day they were missing," Lynd said.

He added that the vehicle was found a few miles north of the four-way stop in Hurley, meaning the girls "weren't far from home" when the car crash occurred.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation as police try and deduce what happened.

Authorities have said the two girls were involved in a single-car crash at the intersection of Highway 613 and Lum Reeves Road.

Police were able to deduce that the car left the road and crashed into an embankment and a tree.

On Monday, following the incident, East Central High School took to Facebook to offer its condolences.

"Please be in prayer today as we mourn the loss of two students. Please pray for guidance as we navigate these tragedies with our students, faculty, and community."

Taylor's mother, Natalie Mann-Taylor, spoke to the Sun Herald and expressed the grief their friends and family are dealing with in the wake of the incident.

"They were best friends, glued to the hip," she said.

"They loved each other and were always there for one another Baleigh and Chloe were the definitions of high-quality friends. They both are flying and will always be in our hearts."

She also shared her agony at losing her daughter in a Facebook post after learning the news.

"My heart, my world, my best friend was taken from me yesterday.

"It doesn't seem real. I'm praying I wake up from this nightmare and she walks through those doors.

"Why was my baby taken from me? Why her. I never expected as a parent I would have to go through this much heartache."
